Clues and Reasons behind Key 2:
MONDAY 4/29
CLUE 1: Not where Emily hid her key last year – The last time I hid a lock box key, I coincidently hid it in the same spot where Emily hid hers the year prior. I did NOT do that this year (just so we’re clear off the bat).
CLUE 2: Used to be so self-centered – Years ago, it was believed that Earth was the CENTER of the universe…the key is on planet Earth.
CLUE 3: BANG! – A reference to the Big Bang…the key is in the known universe (that should narrow it down right?)
TUESDAY 4/30
CLUE 1: A mortal among Gods – Earth is the only planet NOT named after a Greek or Roman god in our solar system…so it’s a “mortal” among the gods. The key is on planet Earth.
CLUE 2: You might see this on Halloween – A reference to a MILKY WAY candy bar…the key is in the Milky Way galaxy.
CLUE 3: Underneath the stars – The key was hidden directly below a mural of Van Gogh’s “STARRY Night”, outside the Dole Mansion. So it was LITERALLY underneath the stars.
WEDNESDAY 5/1
CLUE 1: Are you sure you’re in the right place? – When Christopher Columbus first arrived in America, he thought it was India! What a dummy…The key is in America.
CLUE 2: Don’t call the kettle black – A reference to the United States, also known as “The Great American Melting POT” (the pot calling the kettle black is a common phrase). The key is in the United States.
CLUE 3: Gradually getting slower – Apparently, planet Earth’s rotation is gradually getting slower over time. The key is on Earth.
THURSDAY 5/2
CLUE 1: Version 27 – The current design of the American Flag is it’s 27th. The key is in America.
CLUE 2: I’ll take a DIET Coke – America is a very obese country (hence the DIET coke)..the key is in America.
CLUE 3: Third time’s a charm – Illinois had two other state capitols BEFORE Springfield (Kaskaskia and Vandalia). The key is in Illinois.
FRIDAY 5/3
CLUE 1: If at first you don’t succeed… – A reference to Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln lost FIVE separate elections before being elected president…he’s certainly not a quitter! Illinois is known as “The Land of Lincoln”…the key is in Illinois.
CLUE 2: Nice day for a picnic – There were some picnic tables nearby where I hid the key. They were leaning up against the mural the key was hidden near.
CLUE 3: That’s a lot of ketchup! – Apparently, Illinois is home to the world’s largest bottle of ketchup! Who knew?! The key is in Illinois.
FRIDAY BONUS WEB CLUE 5/3: No wooden teeth for me! – It’s a common belief that George Washington (first U.S. president) had wooden dentures. However, it turns out that this is just a myth! Who knew! The key is in America.
MONDAY 5/6
CLUE 1: Hey Mr. Postman! – This is another reference to Abraham Lincoln. The first public office that Abraham Lincoln took was as POSTMASTER in New Salem, IL. Illinois is the “Land of Lincoln”…the key is in Illinois.
CLUE 2: F YEA! – This is a reference to the theme song from Team America: World Police, famously known for “AMERICA…F*$# YEA!” in the lyrics…the key is in America!
CLUE 3: We were the first! – Illinois was the first state to ratify the 13th Amendment to abolish slavery…the key is in Illinois.
TUESDAY 5/7
CLUE 1: Need a hand? – The key was hidden near two murals outside the Dole Mansion. If you looked closely, you’d notice there were some children’s handprints on one of the murals.
CLUE 2: We’re number 6! – This is a reference to what county the key was hidden in. The key was hidden outside the Dole Mansion, which is located in McHenry County. McHenry County is the sixth-most populous county in Illinois, hence, “We’re number 6!”
CLUE 3: With a stroke of luck, you’ll find the key – The key was hidden near two murals outside the Dole Mansion. You paint a mural with the STROKE of a paintbrush.
WEDNESDAY 5/8
CLUE 1: It used to reach the water – This is another reference to what county the key was hidden in. McHenry County originally stretched all the way east to Lake Michigan, until 1839 when Lake County was formed. The key is in McHenry County.
CLUE 2: Major William reporting for duty – This is another reference to McHenry County. The county was named after Major William McHenry.
CLUE 3: ch-ch-ch-ah-ah-ah… – This is a reference to the Friday The 13th movies. Whenever Jason was nearby, that sound effect would play. Jason famously drowned at Camp CRYSTAL LAKE. The key is in Crystal Lake.
THURSDAY 5/9
CLUE 1: The Diamond in the rough – This is a reference to JOE DIAMOND, who regularly performs at The Dole Mansion. The key is outside the Dole Mansion.
CLUE 2: Can you hear me now? – The key is hidden below a mural of Van Gogh’s “Starry Night”…Van Gogh famously sliced off one of his ears, hence, “Can you hear me now?”
CLUE 3: I’m trying to give you the LARGE PICTURE – The key is hidden below a mural outside the Dole Mansion, or in other words, A LARGE PICTURE.
FRIDAY 5/10
CLUE 1: Big banana house – This is a reference to the DOLE Mansion. DOLE is a company that famously produces fruit, including bananas. A mansion is basically a big house, hence, big banana house.
